Foundations:  11 Core Truths to Build Your Life On
by Tom Holladay &amp; Kay Warren

Foundations is a curriculum about the essential truths of the Christian faith and how these truths are to be lived out-in your relationships, your character, and your work.  This course shows you how to apply biblical truths and implement them in your everyday life.  This spring we will be covering  salvation, sanctification, good and evil, the afterlife, the church, and the second coming.  You do not need to sign up to attend any of the studies, simply show up. The studies will begin the week of Jan. 12th at the following places and times:

(Part 2 of Run the Right Race)

In Acts 1:6-11, Jesus gives his parting words to his closest followers, which was to act as eye witnesses to what Christ had done. This defined what Paul would later call a race.
In Acts 9:15 and 26:19-20, we see Paul&#39;s race, and in 2 Timothy 4:7-8, we see his perspective on completing the race: he finished, and kept the faith. What was the result of Jesus&#39; warnings to these churches? Danny&#39;s research indicates that only 1 of those 7 churches still has influence.Not all will reach the Right Finish Line
Look at 1 Tim 4:1 which warns that some will abandon the faith. Also Gal 5:7-8. How do we avoid veering off the race course and ending up at the wrong finish line?Paul accomplished the purpose which God had for him, appealing to men to repent and turn to God through faith in Christ, and he kept the faith. Six of seven churches did not. 80% of children leave the church when they leave home. What does it take to keep the faith, and more, to accomplish God&#39;s purposes (not be lukewarm)? How do we ensure we reach the finish line?After the Revelation series, I asked our elders what they thought a letter from Jesus to our church would say, and they thought that the depth of relationship with Christ by each person is what needed improvement.
Have you heard the research that says most born-again Christians are indistinguishable from non-Christians in attitude and behavior? Well, maybe you&#39;ve heard the statistics that just as many believers get divorced as unbelievers. Why is that?
[Spouses that pray together]I would like to propose that there are certain practices and support people that each of us needs need to accomplish God&#39;s purposes and keep the faith.The Word of God, the BiblePrior to becoming a follower of Christ, Paul was very knowledgeable of the Law, which included the Old Testament. And he was a star student of his learned teachers, with associated prominence in the community. So he was a skilled speaker and debater. Add to this the understanding of who Christ was, along with the support of the disciples, and he had quite the tool set to accomplish things for God.The people in the 7 churches had various strengths as well, such as ... but they also had... . And Paul had spent time at 4 of the 7, but as best I can tell, he did not visit Smyrna, the only one to remain. (Perhaps the persecution kept it going?)So what do we need today to enable us to run the race to the finish line?First and foremost: We need to think like our Jesus. Regular communication with God (which includes continued dealing with sin, but goes beyond that) - Word -&gt; Spirit -&gt; Prayer -&gt; Action
We need to know God well - which is Jesus&#39; definition of eternal life in John 17:3
How do we do that? He reveals Himself in the Word, and that is where we must start. The OT was Paul&#39;s source material, and he wrote a significant part of the NT. Look at 2 Tim 3:16:All scripture is God-breathed and useful for:
 Teaching [part of renewing our mind of Rom 12:1]
 Rebuking [awareness of veering off the path, which may come from the Spirit within us convicting us, or from a loving brother or sister]
 Correcting [how to get back on the path]
 Training in righteousness [how to stay on the path in the future]
So that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.Let me give you an example, and it can be a hard one: say a single person who is a follower of Christ begins dating someone who is not a follower, and the believer comes across 1 Corinthians 6:14, 15. 
A good method to studying Scripture is to ask for God&#39;s guidance as we ask 3 questions: what does it say, what does it mean, and what does it mean to me? And it doesn&#39;t hurt to compare with what others think.
The Spirit will likely convict them of the need to cease pursuing such a relationship. This would be rebuke. I have seen this happen with a roommate in college. There were 3 of us in an apartment, all believers, and he really fell for a gal who was not a Christ-follower. We pointed this out to him and he understood our concern and the basis for it, but tried to rationalize it. He ended up marrying her. Years later I had a chance to visit the two of them, and they seemed fine, but my concern is that in answer to Paul&#39;s question of 6:15, the only thing they have in common is things besides following Christ! How is he going to maintain the race and cross the finish line?

More recently, I&#39;ve known an individual who fell into the same sort of situation, but on the advice of several people to avoid getting involved, and based on his own realization that he was thinking more about the other person than the Lord (in addition to his knowledge of this passage), he pulled back. This would be correction. He prayed for 2 weeks that it could end on a positive note, without anger (including against Christianity). Finally, continued time in the Word would provide an opportunity for the Spirit to provide further guidance to avoid such situations in the future, as well as broader.Remember that Paul&#39;s message was that men turn to God in repentance, and prove their repentance by their deeds. The work of the Spirit through the Word is how we accomplish these deeds. Without the Word, we are adrift! How can we take in the word?Hand illustration

Take a look at survey results (130 respondents), particularly prayer (individ &amp; couples) vs. Word.Dealing with Sin
What can prevent our time in the Word from being effective?
Deal with obvious sin (Heb 12:1, 2)
Deal with subtle sin
Rom 13:8-14God&#39;s Heart
How does sin in other&#39;s lives affect us? Especially in unbelievers? Tends to turn us away from them. (We need to help believers realize and deal with them, but with unbelievers we need to testify to what God has done for us rather than pointing out sin to them - that&#39;s the role of the Holy Spirit to convict the world of sin, judgement and righteousness.)God&#39;s call is for us to love people - the greatest commandment from Jesus. This may mean adjusting our response to people in order to earn the right to be heard (1 Cor 9:19-23)Witnesses of God&#39;s Activity
Ability to tell unbelievers wherever we go what Christ has done in our lives (Acts 1:8)
(Example: Paul&#39;s testimony of before, how, and after)
Be ready to give answer for the hope that is in you... 1 Pet 3:15-16
Small group project to do it in 3 minutes (share mine?)Support people: Coach, trainer, fellow runner
Coach: someone to give you direction and teach you specific skills, such as a teacher of the Word
Trainer: someone to help you deal with injury (such as sin or heart pain), such as a trusted friend or confidant
Fellow runner: someone going through similar things as you (spiritually as well as station in life) from whom you can learn and whom you can impart what you have learned.Take a look at survey results, particularly worship vs. small groups.TAKE AWAY: Which finish line are you racing toward? Worldly success (wherever that is), meaning to get ahead? Or the countercultural race of faith, to testify of God&#39;s work in your life to others and keep the faith until you reach the finish line? Assuming the latter, which of the above 7 points is God leading you to improve in 2009? How are you going to ensure that you do so? Who are you going to tell that will help hold you to it? </description>

      Takeaway: living by faith throughout one&#8217;s life is a competition with distractions, the sinful nature, and the enemy influencing others around us. Taking this competition seriously brings people to faith, glory to God and His reward to us.Questions: Are you running the right race? If not, why not? If yes, what distractions are hindering you from running at full speed? What sins are entangling you?What is your training regimen? Is it squeezed into the rest of your life, or is the rest of your life adjusted to fit around your training?Who is your human coach and trainer? And who are you coaching and training?Are you running for the long haul? With endurance and patience? Or are you in a sprint and will soon flame out?

CONDEMNATION (3:15-17)
What causes &quot;lukewarm&quot; living?
1.  Self-satisfaction
a. &quot;I am rich&quot;, an over abundance of material stuff that gives a false sense of security and happiness
b. &quot;I have become wealthy&quot;, the primary priority is remaining in this comfortable material state and gaining more
c. &quot;need nothing&quot; (literally &quot;no one&quot;), they didn&#39;t need help from man or God

2. Self-deception

EXHORTATION (3:18-19)
What is the cure for &quot;lukewarm&quot; living?
&quot;Gain or acquire&quot; three things from Jesus:
1. &quot;gold refined by fire&quot; that purifies our lives
2. &quot;white garments&quot; to clothe ourselves in the righteousness and joy of Jesus
3. &quot;eye salve&quot; in order to see spiritual realities

PROMISES (3:20-21)
Intimate fellowship (v.20)
Authority and recognition (v.21)


TAKE AWAY:  The greatest fear for our church should not be failure, but succeeding at things that don&#39;t really matter.

* What do you think is required of someone to move from lukewarm to hot or cold?  Have you, or are you willing to do this?  Why or why not?

TAKE AWAY:  When Christ-followers are intentional about doing good to others the church&#39;s light glimmers brightly and it becomes most difficult to deny God&#39;s power.

1. What open doors has God placed before you?  How have you responded to these opportunities?

2. Are you aware of opportunities for doing good deed in our community?  Do you or your small group have a plan to address those needs?

CONDEMNATION (3:1)
&#8220;I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead.&#8221; What are signs of a dead or dying church?
&#8226;   There is the receiving of God&#8217;s word but no response to God&#8217;s word.
&#8226;   There is service but no sacrifice.
&#8226;   There are programs but no progress.
&#8226;   There are challenges but an unwillingness to change. 

EXHORTATION AND WARNING (3:2-3)
&#8226;   &quot;Wake up!&#8221;
&#8226;   &quot;Strengthen what remains&#8221;
&#8226;   &quot;Remember&#8221;
&#8226;   &quot;Obey it&#8221;
&#8226;   &quot;Repent&#8221;&#8220;If you do not wake up I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you.&#8221;

ENCOURAGEMENT AND PROMISE (3:4-6)&#8226;   There will be public recognition of faithfulness (v.4)

o     Whatever it means it cannot contradict other scripture passages that give us clarity on the issue John 10:28-29Romans 8:38-392 Timothy 2:131 John 5:12Revelation 13:8o    This verse doesn&#8217;t say anything about those who don&#8217;t overcome but re-confirms that the believer&#8217;s names are supremely secure in His book of life.  o     What about those who professed Christianity but then denounced their faith and walked away?  1 John 2:18-19TAKE AWAY:  A healthy church doesn&#8217;t get distracted by its reputation but consistently prioritizes devotion to Jesus, His Word and His call.

QUESTIONS FOR PRAYER AND REFLECTIONIn what ways have you specifically &#8220;responded&#8221; to God&#8217;s word in the last year?

Commendation (2:13)

Rebuke and Warning (2:14-16)

The Three Cylinders of the World System
1.    Lust of the Flesh:  Over-indulgence of self
2.    Lust of the Eyes:  Drive to increase my stuff
3.    Pride of Life:  Living to impress and be impressed by others
&quot;What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church?  Are you not to judge those inside?  God will judge those outside.  Expel the wicked man from among you.&quot;&#8212;I Corinthians 5:12-13

Promises to Overcomers (2:17)
&#8226;    Christ will remain a faithful sustainer...&quot;I will give some of the hidden manna.&quot;

TAKE AWAY:  The challenge for Christ-followers is to CONNECT with the culture without CONFORMING to the culture.

TAKE AWAY:  Every generation of Christ-followers must determine the value of the culture&#39;s standards through the grid of scripture.

Letter to the Suffering Church
Revelation 2:8-11 What is the most persecuted religion in the world today?
&#8226;    82% of all those killed in the last year for religious beliefs were Christians.
&#8226;    Of the worlds 2 billion Christians, 200 million in 60 countries live under daily threat of death, imprisonment or torture while another 400 million face discrimination and restrictions for their beliefs.
&#8226;    Last year 167,000 Christians were beheaded, shot, tortured to death or forcibly starved simply for their belief in Christ.  
&#8226;    The Open Door Ministry&#8217;s annual &#8220;Hall of Shame&#8221; lists Saudi Arabia as the greatest persecutor of Christians.  

What does Jesus know about the church at Smyrna?
&#8226;    He knows their afflictions (physical persecution)
&#8226;    He knows their poverty (social persecution)

Why are followers of Christ persecuted?  
John 15:18-25 gives us three reasons:
1.     Because of a different value system: &#8220;chosen out of the world&#8221; (vv. 18-19)
2.     Because of the association with Jesus: &#8220;they will treat you this way because of my name...&#8221; (v. 21a)
3.    Because of ignorance:  &#8220;They do not know the One who sent me&#8221; (v. 21b)

Jesus gives the church two exhortations:
1.    &#8220;Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer&#8221;
2.    &#8220;Be faithful, even to the point of death...&#8221;

Jesus gives the church two promises:
1.    They will be rewarded with the &#8220;crown of life&#8221;
2.    They will never face the torment of the &#8220;second death&#8221;
&#8220;Remember your word to your servant, for you have given me hope.  My comfort in my suffering is this:  Your promise preserves my life.&#8221;&#8212;Psalm 119:49-50

What do you say to the suffering?
&#8226;    The Lord knows all about suffering (v.8)
&#8226;    The Lord knows all about your suffering
&#8226;    The Lord provides the grace for you to be faithful because he is faithful
&#8226;    The Lord promises a wonderful future (John 14:1-4)


TAKE AWAY:  The present sufferings do not continue forever but the blessings that are ours in Christ go on for eternity.  

QUESTION FOR REFLECTION
Would you be spiritually prepared if today you were visited by some form of suffering?  Why or why not?

&#8226;    &quot;You have forsaken your first love.&quot;

Correction and Warning (2:5-6)
&#8226;    Remember 
&#8226;    Repent: &quot;A total change of thought and behavior.&quot;
&#8226;    Redo
      -  Spend time worshipping the Lord
      -  Maximize time with godly people
      -  Repent from the pride of busyness

Promise (2:7)

TAKE AWAY:   An overcomer is a Christ-follower who doesn&#39;t lose devotion to Jesus while carrying out duty for Jesus.  

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION:
Consider you work of ministry over the last 6 months.  Now read the following verses:  1 Corinthians 3:12-15 and 2 Corinthians 5:9-10.  With your works being tested against your love for Jesus how much of what you have done will survive?

Loving Jesus is a lifestyle which sometimes requires as lifestyle change.  Thinking about making life-altering changes can seem overwhelming.  So would you be willing to take a smaller bite at a lifestyle change by committing for the duration of this series to the three recommendations under the Redo portion of the sermon?

Starting in January 2009 THE ROCK will be trying something new. We call them Life Groups. The purpose is to connect with each youth with other youths their age and a &quot;shepherd&quot; (A shepherd is the adult leader of the group) on a more regular basis than we may typically have a big youth event. Life groups will meet monthly to do fun activities like bowling, putt-putt golf, a day at Ceraland, Paintball or any other fun activities in and around Columbus.  Life Groups will also participate in service related activities in and around Columbus 

 

We divide our Life Groups up this way: 7-9 graders, 10-12 graders, and recently graduated thru 22 year olds. We divide our group this way because of size and because youths in these age groups all have specific and different needs that can be answered better by grouping youths into these categories.

 Our hope for this experiment is that the youth group as a whole will grow bigger and that the youth will be more connected to the adults who care about their lives</description>

How would those who know you best prioritize your goals?

&#8226; Was Paul wrong in going to Jerusalem? Three conclusions
   - Paul was out of God&#8217;s will
   - Spirit led Paul&#8217;s friends to see what would happen to Paul as a test of faith to see if Paul would follow through
   - His friends saw correctly what would happen to Paul but drew the wrong conclusions about his going
&#8226; Reasons Paul pressed on to Jerusalem:
   - Understood the &#8220;Big Picture&#8221; call on his life (9:15-16)
   - Understood his ministry would be characterized by suffering and threats from the very beginning
   - Paul saw his suffering as a privilege more than a problem (Philippians 3:10)
&#8226; Questions to consider when giving or receiving counsel/advice:
   - Has there been time for consideration? &#8220;Be quick to listen and slow to speak&#8221;
   - Is the counsel based on principle or subjective feelings? It&#8217;s too easy for well-intentioned concern to lead to ill-conceived advice.
   - Is the intent of the counsel to avoid suffering or to do what is right?
   - Is the advice motivated to look out for self or will it benefit others?

TAKE AWAY: Jesus may not come through for us in the way we wish because he would never choose for us safety at the cost of eternal significance.

1. What is the difference between being &#8220;well acquainted with the Way&#8221; and being a believer? As others observe your life to which of the two categories would they say you belong?

       a.    Balance between doctrine and lifestyle
       b.    Balance between mentoring and evangelization
       c.    Balance in his teaching&#8212;&#8220;the whole counsel of God&#8221; (v.27)
       d.    Balance in his ministry between Jews and Gentiles
       e.    Balance between tenderness (tears) and toughness
5.    Paul&#8217;s ministry reflected a profound grasp of the relationship between strength and weakness (2  Corinthians 12:1-10) 
6.    Paul&#8217;s ministry was characterized by freedom.
       a.    Freedom from guilt because he fulfilled his ministry at Ephesus
       b.    Freedom to leave
       c.    Freedom to live or die (Philippians 1:19-26)
       d.    Freedom from greed, self-seeking, and self-interest
7.    Paul understood the fallibility of people and the faithfulness of God.

The Resilience of a Great Leader (28-31)
&#8226;     (28a) Practices a personally disciplined life.
&#8226;     (28b) Sacrificially feeds, leads and protects the flock.

The Rewards of a Great Leader (32-38)
&#8226;    (32) Enjoys an extra measure of God&#8217;s grace
&#8226;    Enjoys a portion of the inheritance of those they have led


TAKE AWAY:  The difference between those who call themselves leaders and truly great leaders is a resilient life and a wake of lives positively impacted for eternity.

3.     A mentor will address weaknesses that need to be strengthened through vulnerability (v 26b).
Benefit: The one being mentored remains humble and teachable.

4.    A mentor endorses your gifts and life (v.27).
Benefit: You desire to do your best.

TAKE AWAY: You can recognize a mature follower of Christ by their investment in others and a growing follower of Christ by their teachable spirit.

&#8220;By the word of the Lord were the heavens made, the starry host by the breath of his mouth...For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, at it stood firm.&#8221;&#8212;Psalm 33:6,9

&#8220;Does not wisdom call out?  Does not understanding raise her voice...To you, O men, I call out; I raise my voice to all mankind.  You who are simple, gain prudence; you who are foolish, gain understanding.  Listen, for I have worthy things to say; I open my lips to speak what is right.  My mouth speaks what is true, for my lips detest wickedness.  All the words of my mouth are just; none of them are crooked or perverse.  To the discerning all of them are right; they are faultless to those who have knowledge.  Choose my instruction instead of silver, knowledge rather than choice gold, for wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her.&#8221;&#8212;Proverbs 8:1-11



Is the voice of God just for Apostles and prophets?  Can we actually live a lifestyle of hearing God&#8217;s voice, if so, how?
1.     Listen for God&#8217;s voice.  This requires a tenacious commitment to solitude on our part.  
&#8220;Be still and know that I am God.&#8221;&#8212;Psalm 46:10

2.    Seek God&#8217;s voice in His word.  
&#8220;For the word of God living and active.  Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.&#8221;&#8212;Hebrews 4:12

3.    Respond to God&#8217;s voice.  
&#8220;Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves.  Do what it says.  Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what is says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.  But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it&#8212;he will be blessed in what he does.&#8221;&#8212;James 1:22-25

TAKE AWAY:  God&#8217;s nature is to always speak words of life to us but we must be willing to train our hearts to listen.

Acts 16 Matthew 9:36, &#8220;When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.&#8221;  

Felt compassion, grk splancthna, &#8220;to feel in the bowels.&#8221;

Harassed, can mean &#8220;molested&#8221;

Helpless or downcast, literally comes from a wrestling term and means &#8220;pinned down by force&#8221;.  

READ CHAPTER 16:1-40

Verses 1-5:  Why did Paul circumcise Timothy after his strong stance against it in chapter 15?  Is this a double standard?

Verses 6-10:  How do you determine if God is &#8220;opening&#8221; or &#8220;closing&#8221; a door in your life?  Have you ever misread an open or closed door?  What did you learn?

Verses 11-15:  How did the Lord open your heart to respond to the gospel?  What people did he use as part of the process?

Verses 16-40:  If you were falsely accused, severely beaten and thrown into a dark dungeon, would you still trust your sense that God had called you to this place?  Why or why not?  

Why did Paul insist on his rights as a Roman citizen?  (Note:  This action of Paul&#8217;s probably helped diffuse future problems for young Philippian church)

Questions:
1.     What are you willing to endure for the opportunity for others to come to know Christ?  
2.    Do you find that Jesus is changing your heart for people you normally would hold in contempt?  Why or why not?  


TAKE AWAY:  If we are willing to take the right risks and see past lifestyles and attitudes we will continue to see people saved.

Galatians 5:1-6, 11-16 

We see from Paul and Barnabas&#8217; example that coming to a healthy resolution of conflict always takes two things:
1.     A willingness to be in conflict 
2.    Time 

Resolution of this important issue required several things of Paul and Barnabas:
Travel from Antioch to JerusalemAn initial public meeting in verse 4A private conference between Paul and the key leaders that he writes about in Galatians 2:2A second public meeting where the strong Jewish party presents their case (verse 5 and Galatians 2:3-5)The final council (v. 6ff) where Peter and Paul give their reports and the final decision is made.  


TAKE AWAY:  Truth and the defense of truth is the heartbeat of spiritual health and therefore the priority of all relationships. 


Question 1:  In what ways do you or even our church add on to the gospel in our relationships with those who don&#8217;t follow Christ?


Question 2:  When it comes to conflicts worth getting into, do you respond more like Paul and Barnabas or Lt. Norman Dike?  



Danny&#39;s prayer:

O Lord, whether I am accepted or rejected in the eyes of men, may it be based solely on the merits of my relationship with and obedience to my Savior.  Then, as Paul before me, I will rejoice always.

The Holy Spirit.  John 16: 13, &#8220;But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth.&#8221;  But scripture also says we can &#8220;resist the Spirit&#8221; or &#8220;grieve the Spirit.&#8221;   The Word of God.  2 Tim. 3:16, &#8220;All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.&#8221;Mentors and brothers and sisters.          



TAKE AWAY:  Serving the Lord loyally requires faith, courage and endurance.

Acts 11:19-30


What one person has encouraged you most in your faith and how has this built your faith? 
CAUTION:  Sometimes we get ourselves into trouble when trying to keep everyone happy (Galatians 2:11-13).


Principle:  When doing the next right thing be sensitive to reactions of others, but don&#8217;t allow those reactions to carry weight with you.


Here are some situations where making everyone happy will keep you from doing the right things and growing in maturity and spiritual health:
Confronting someoneFiring, laying off, demoting, or reassigning an employeeSaying no to a request to do something that involves time, energy, money, or other resourcesSaying no to a request because it would not fit with your church&#8217;s values or your personal valuesDoing an intervention with someone because of their destructive behaviorTelling someone they have overstayed their welcomeMaking someone aware of a flaw that they do not see in themselves that is hurting their relationship with others

Proverbs 27:6, &#8220;Wounds from a friend can be trusted.&#8221;  Hurt does not harm.
Proverbs 19:19, &#8220;Do not rescue an angry man, lest you have to do it again tomorrow.&#8221;  


Empathize with others instead of letting them control you.  You can respond like this:
&#8220;I&#8217;m sorry this decision is frustrating to you.  I can see it is hard for you to accept.&#8221;
&#8220;I&#8217;m sorry that it feels to you like I don&#8217;t care.  That must be difficult.  But I really hope you can see that I do care.
&#8220;I&#8217;m sorry it is so frustrating to you that I am making this choice.  I hope you can accept that I still care for you even though I&#8217;ve decided to do this in this way.&#8221;  


Jesus said, &#8220;Woe to you when all men speak well of you.&#8221; (Luke 6:26)  

TAKE AWAY:  A true encourager will glorify Jesus by seeking the best for others even when painful and unpopular.   

QUESTIONS:
1.     In what specific ways are you like Barnabas the encourager?  How about Barnabas the &#8220;people pleaser.&#8221;

2.    What would you consider to be the evidence of the grace of God in your life?  In our church?

 TAKE AWAY:  Displaying humility and showing (agape) love to others reveals the presence of God&#8217;s grace.  Separateness from an attitude of superiority reveals sin. 


Question:  What would your neighbors sense from your family, a lifestyle of humility and grace or superiority and separateness?  


Question:  In 2 Peter 3:9b, Peter writes, &#8220;He (God) is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.&#8221;  The fact that Peter penned those words tells us his heart expanded for all people.  Is there an individual (s) or people group that you need God to expand your heart for?


Question:  Are you doing the right thing with one hand but harboring a clinched fist attitude in your heart?  Do you have an attitude of a critical spirit, self-righteousness or judgment?

WORSHIP TEACHING
Transcendent
1.    Superior in quality of achievement
2.    Beyond limits of experience
3.    Beyond categories
4.    Independent of the world, existing outside the material universe and therefore not limited by it.  


SERMON    
The focus of the Book of Acts is essentially this:
 (1) The expansion from Christ, to His apostles, to His church
(2) The geographical expansion from Jerusalem to Rome
(3) The racial expansion from the Jews to the Gentiles.

1.     HIS PURPOSES TRANSCEND OUR PLANS.  
The mind of a man plans his way, But the LORD directs his steps (Proverbs 16:9).
Many are the plans in a man&#8217;s heart, But the counsel of the LORD, it will stand (Proverbs 19:21).
You are resplendent with light, more majestic than mountains rich with game (Psalm 76:4).
He wraps himself in light as with a garment; he stretches out the heavens like a tent (Psalm 104:2).
Who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen (1 Timothy 6:16).

2.    HIS KNOWLEDGE OF US TRANSCENDS THE KNOWLEDGE OF OURSELVES.   
12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me faithful, appointing me to his service. 13 Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. 14 The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 15 Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners&#8212;of whom I am the worst. 16 But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life (1 Timothy 1:12-16). 

3.     HIS TRANSCENDENCE IS REVEALED MOST GREATLY IN GRACE.
8 and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born. 9 For I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them&#8212;yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.7 I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God&#8217;s grace given me through the working of his power. 8 Although I am less than the least of all God&#8217;s people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, 9 and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things. 10 His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, 11 according to his eternal purpose which he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord (1 Corinthians 15:8-11).


TAKE AWAY:  Our priorities reveal what we truly believe about God&#8217;s transcendence.
4b If anyone else thinks he has reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more: 5 circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee; 6 as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for legalistic righteousness, faultless. 7 But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. 8 What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ, 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ&#8212;the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith. (Philippians 3:4-9)


QUESTIONS:
&#8226;    Up to this point in your life, is your journey more about your plans or God&#8217;s purposes?  If more about your plans, what keeps you from seriously considering God&#8217;s purposes as a priority... fear, lack of trust, selfishness, etc.? 
&#8226;    What would need to happen for you to change from your purposes to God&#8217;s plans...knowing Christ as Savior, knowledge of what the Bible says, humility?
