With nearly three out of every four people in the Unites States, Canada and their territories living without a personal relationship with Christ, it is easy to see how urgently people need to hear the Good News of Jesus Christ. Only God is powerful enough to transform the lives of those living in sin or living without the hope that is found in eternal salvation. Each person's life can be transformed by the same power that raised Jesus from the grave and offered eternal life to those who would follow Him.

During the Week of Prayer for North American Missions, consider how you can "Live with Urgency" and impact the Kingdom of God through your continued prayers, giving, and going in this urgent task God has called us to carry out. If you need to pick up a giving envelope or brochure on the Week of Prayer, check out the Connections Table in the foyer.

Our Sunday morning worship music is a combination of contemporary worship songs and traditional hymns. A variety of instruments are used including guitars, percussion, keyboard, wind and stringed instruments. We believe that true worship doesn't take place just on Sunday mornings but involves the outpouring of our love for God every day of our life. Sunday mornings allow a time for believers to come together to express that love for God.

Is Jesus Enough? - "I Am the Gate for the Sheep and the Good Shepherd" - Current Sermon Series

IS JESUS ENOUGH?
The Gate for the Sheep and the Good Shepherd
John 10:1-30The people of Israel had been looking forward to the coming of the Messiah whose leadership would be like that of a shepherd. The leadership and care of the Shepherd of Israel is described in many Old Testament passages (Ps. 23; 80:1-2; Ecc. 12:11; Isa. 40:11; Jer. 31:10). In Jesus' last public discourse he makes the bold claim that he is indeed the Shepherd Israel has been waiting for setting off violent opposition against him.

1. (vv.7-10) Jesus, as the "Gate" is characterized by...SalvationFreedomProvision Abundant life

*In contrast to false messiahs who deceived and caused violence.

2. (vv.11-18) Jesus, as the Good Shepherd is characterized by...Authority over life and deathSelf-sacrificeIntimate knowledge of his Father and followersConcern and love for all people

*In contrast to the "hired hand" who is self-serving and abandons the flock when things become difficult.

3. (vv.25-30) The "sheep" (true believers) are characterized by...Sensitivity...............They "hear my voice"Relationship..........."I know them" (see Luke 13:22-30; Mt. 7:21-23)Obedience.............."They follow me" (John 15: 1John 2:3-6)Life..........................."I give them eternal life"Assurance..............."they shall never perish"Security..................."No one shall snatch them out of my hand"

TAKE AWAY: God has designed the church so that the needs of His people can be met in the context of the Good Shepherd, the under-shepherds and the flock.

QUESTION FOR REFLECTION AND PRAYER:

How is being part of God's flock changing your life?

Listen to the message delivered on Sunday, February 28th, 2010 by Pastor Dan Houze. IS JESUS ENOUGH?
"I am the Light of the world"
John 8:12-30

The light metaphor of the Messiah is steeped in Old Testament scripture. The glory of the very presence of God in the cloud led the people to the Promised Land (Ex. 13:21-22) and protected them from those who would destroy them (Ex. 14:19-25). The Israelites were trained to sing, "The Lord is my light and my salvation" (Ps. 27:1). The word of God, the law of God, is a light to guide the path of those who cherish instruction (Ps. 119:105; Pr. 6:23); God's light is seen in His revelation to man (Ezk. 1:4, 13, 26-28) and in His salvation (Hab. 3:3-4). Isaiah tells us that the servant of the LORD was appointed as a light to the Gentiles, that he might bring God's salvation to the ends of the earth (Is. 49:6). The coming future age will be a time when the LORD himself would be the light for his people (Is. 60:19-22; Rev. 21:23-24).

John's prologue of the gospel (John 1:1-9)

Setting of chapter 8: The Festival of Tabernacles in the Court of Women commemorating God's guidance of the Israelites in the wilderness by the pillar of fire.

What is the Biblical purpose for "light?"Exposure (John 3:20)Illumination of truth for the purpose of salvation (Is. 49:6)Guidance (Ps. 119:105)Protection and provision (Ex. 14:19-25; Rev. 21:23-24)

Biblical references to "darkness" in our world:Those who choose darkness over light (John 3:20-21)Those who believe they are in light because of outward appearances but are blind (John 7:24)Those who say they believe but will not follow (8:31ff)Those who have been deceived by Satan as an "angel of light" (2 Cor. 11:13-15)

How does the Light change us?We no longer feel the need to hide.We move from objective, intellectual belief to "following" belief (John 8:12; 15:4).We become "the light of the world" (Matthew 5:14,16).

TAKE AWAY: Genuinely following Jesus Christ is not only the way to heaven; it is the only way to escape the darkness of this life.

QUESTION FOR REFLECTION AND PRAYER:

Have you come to trust in Jesus as the Light of your world?

Listen to Sunday's message delivered on March 7th, 2010 by Pastor Dan Houze. This message is part of a sermon series entitled "Is Jesus Enough?". Given the times in which we live, it is probably common to ask ourselves if we are enough to face the challenges of this life. While the question, "Am I enough?" is worth wrestling with, the reality is we are not enough! As Christ-followers many of us turn our concerns to our Savior. Our questions become expectations we place in the hands of an all-powerful God. But what if Jesus isn't interested in "fixing" our lives according to our expectations? What if he has something else in mind? We find ourselves wrestling with a new question: "Is Jesus enough?" It's a good question. Our Lord anticipated the question and so throughout the Gospel of John he makes 7 "I am" statements that deal directly with who he is and what he offers those who follow him.

This week's message covered the statements: "I am the Gate for the Sheep and the Good Shepherd". Check out the sermon notes here.

Is Jesus Enough? - "I am the Bread of Life" - Current Sermon Series

Listen to the sermon delivered on February 21st, 2010 by Pastor Danny Houze. IS JESUS ENOUGH?
"I Am the Bread of Life"
John 6:25-71

INTRODUCTION TO THE GOSPEL OF JOHN:

Comparing John with the Synoptic Gospels:John doesn't include Jesus' genealogy, birth, baptism, temptation, casting out of demons, parables, transfiguration, instituting of the Lord's Supper, Gethsemane or his ascension. John's Gospel stresses Jesus' ministry in Jerusalem, the feasts of the Jewish nation, Jesus' relationships with people in private conversations and his ministry to his disciples. The Gospel also contains 7 major miracles or "signs" which proclaim and prove Jesus as the Messiah. The distinctiveness that we are going to concentrate on for the next several weeks are the series of "I am" statements made by Jesus.

Purpose of Gospel of John: John 20:31, "But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. The key word in the Gospel of John is "believe" and is used 98 times. The meaning of the word in the Greek language stresses an active, continuous and vital trust in Jesus.

JESUS' SEVEN "I AM'S" IN THE GOSPEL OF JOHN"I am the Bread of Life" (Jn. 6:35)."I am the Light of the world" (Jn. 8:12)."I am the Gate for the Sheep" (Jn. 10:7)."I am the Good Shepherd" (Jn. 10:11, 14)."I am the Resurrection and the Life" (Jn. 11:25)."I am the Way and the Truth and the Life (Jn. 14:6)."I am the true Vine" (Jn. 15:1, 5)

"When we get our spiritual house in order, we'll be dead. This goes on. You arrive at enough certainty to be able to make your way, but it is making it in darkness. Don't expect faith to clear things up for you. It is trust, not certainty." - Flannery O'Conner

Some wrong reasons people turn to or reject the gospel:Many seek Jesus to "meet their needs" which are almost always physical or material (Jn. 6:30, 34).Many want a Savior on their terms (Jn. 6:28, 30).Many would rather have a god in their image rather than submit to a God who conforms us to His image (Jn. 6:31).

What does Jesus say about Himself? The "Bread of Life" is a Person (Jn. 6:32-40).The "Bread of Life" is eternal not temporal (Jn. 6:44-51).The "Bread of Life" gives empowerment by the Spirit (Jn. 6:61-64).

TAKE AWAY: The Bread of Life invites us to trust Him in spite of our doubts, confusion and questions because there is no place else to go (Jn. 6:68-69).

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION AND PRAYER:If you were raised in the church, has your "familiarity" with Jesus been a struggle for you to see who he really is?

How would you articulate your motive for believing and following Jesus?

      Logos.ReferenceTagging.lbsBibleVersion = "ESV";      Logos.ReferenceTagging.lbsLinksOpenNewWindow = true;      Logos.ReferenceTagging.lbsLibronixLinkIcon = "dark";      Logos.ReferenceTagging.lbsNoSearchTagNames = [ "h1", "h2", "h3" ];      Logos.ReferenceTagging.tag();

Why Study the Bible? - How to Study the Bible

See Psalm 1:1-4. Howard Hendricks, distinguished professor at Dallas Theological Seminary, has a good video series available online entitled "Bible Study Methods". It consists of 15 video segments, each about 5 minutes long. Links to these segments are included at appropriate places in the outline of Howard's methods below. The Benefits of Bible Study In the first video he considers the benefits of studying the Bible found in the following passages of Scripture: a) 1 Pet 2:2 - essential to spiritual growth
  b) Heb 5:11-14 - leads to spiritual maturity
  c) 2 Tim 3:16-17 - useful for instruction
In the second video, he answers "What is personal Bible study?"He says it is a method involves 3 steps answering the following questions:Observation - what do I see in the Scriptures?Interpretation - what does it mean?Application - how does it work? Good observation produces good, accurate interpretation.Unless you have good interpretation, you have illegitimate application. This method must be approached with a view to becoming receptive and reproductive and always by means of firsthand acquaintance with the Word. Following such a method produces the following results:
  1. Enable you to think for yourself 2. Enable you to evaluate the thoughts of others (e.g. evaluate one commentary vs another) 3. Gives you the joy of personal discovery of truth 4. Enable you to fall in love with the Author

CONNECT

We believe that life change happens through the power of the gospel. We also believe that relationships are an avenue for the gospel. It is our aim to connect students through Christ-centered relationships with other students and with caring adults who will motivate them in their relationship with Christ.

GROW

In all ways - intellectually, physically and spiritually - this can be an exciting season of growth for students. It is our hope to produce followers of Jesus by deepening their knowledge of God through Bible study, memorization and meditation on God's Word.

GIVE

Jesus came not to be served, but to serve. Fighting the cultural obsession of personal entitlement and consumer consumption, we hope to raise up a generation of servants. Students more concerned with giving than getting and more focused on serving that being served.

Week Four: The Woman Caught In Adultery - Outside the Walls

Listen to the message delivered by Elder David Runge on February 14, 2010. The Church Beyond the Walls : Encounters with Jesus
Week Four - The Woman Caught In Adultery
John 7-8:11
Fall 30 AD

It was six months before Jesus' crucifixion, and conflict between him and the Jewish leaders was escalating. They were actively seeking to kill him, so Jesus had to go to the Feast of Tabernacles in secret. The Jewish leaders set a trap, involuntarily recruiting a woman of poor reputation. Their trap revolved around a simple question. Would Jesus uphold the law, as Moses required, and condemn a woman to death, or would he refuse to condemn her and show himself as a lawbreaker and an enemy to the Jewish religion? Jesus' response was profound and turned the tables back on those who sought to trap him. More than that, it demonstrated Jesus' authority to forgive sin as the event approached which made that possible.

Results of an Encounter with Jesus:

1. You will be left blind and hardened. (Wk 4-Luke 8:12, Matt. 23:1-33, John 8:48-52)

2. You will be left restored and softened. (Wk 4-Luke 8:15, Luke 19:1-9)

3. You will be left dejected and sad. (Wk 4-Luke 8:14, Matt. 19:16-22)

Take Aways
What Blocks God's Power? 1. Making assumptions about where God works. (Wk 1-John 4:35).

2. Being too focused on physical necessities to notice what God is doing around you. (Wk 1-John 4:31)

3. A sense of familiarity and routine. (Wk 2-Matt. 13:58) (Wk 4-John 7:1-5)

4. Focusing on benefits rather than relationship. (Wk 3-Luke 15:29)

What Releases God's Power?

1. A sense of expectancy, looking around to see what God is doing. Often the most shunned are the most open. (Wk 1-John 4:5-6) (Wk 2-Luke 5:17-19)

2. Simply sharing what you have of or know about Jesus, as little as it may be with a sense of awe and humility. (Wk 1-John 4:28-30)

3. Faith. Seeking Jesus in spite of the obstacles. (Wk 2-Luke 5:18-19)

4. Awe. Jesus reputation had preceded Him, and their sense of expectancy and awe was a big part of the Lord's power to heal being available. (Wk 2-Matt. 9:8, Luke 5:17)

What is Irrelevant?

1. God can use us in spite of messed up theology. (Wk 1-John 4:20)

2. God can use us in spite of our messed up lives. (Wk 1-John 4:17-18)

3. God's power is not limited by circumstances for those who press through to seek Him in faith. (Wk 2-Luke 5:19)

4. God's power is not limited by opposition; in fact, it actually can grow stronger. (Wk 2-Luke 5:17, Matt. 9:3-7)

What Attracts People to Jesus?

1. He knows everything about me and yet does not condemn me. (Wk 1-John 4:29) (Wk 4-John 8:10-11)

2. He forgives sin. (Wk 2-Matt. 9:2-7) (Wk 4-John 8:10-11)

3. He heals. (Wk 2-Matt. 9:6-7)

4. He covers my shame. (Wk 3-Luke 15:21-25) (Wk 4-John 8:10-11)

5. He celebrates me and wants to be in relationship. (Wk 3-Luke 15:7)

Pharisaical Attitudes (P.A.s):

1. Religious taboos should not be crossed for ministry. (Wk 1-John 4:27)

2. Place a higher priority on doctrine than on God's work. (Wk 2-Matt. 9:3)

3. Place a higher priority on doing everything right than on showing mercy. (Wk 2-Matt. 9:13)

4. Obtain sense of value and worth by comparison. (Wk 2-Luke 18:11)

5. Obtain sense of value and worth from recognition from others. (Wk 2-Matt. 6:1-4)

6. Can open the door to evil and abuse. (Wk 4-John 8:3-6, Ezek. 34)

In what ways is my life a living parable, dramatizing the truths of the Kingdom of Heaven? (Ephesians 3:8-12)

How can I maintain an expectancy that God wants to "break in" at any time? (John 5:17)

Listen to the message given by Elder David Runge on January 24th, 2010. The Church Beyond the Walls : Encounters with Jesus
Week One - The Woman at the Well
John 4

God's power to save is manifested outside the walls of the temple to outcasts in Sychar, Samaria. Jesus ignores cultural prohibitions and taboos and initiates a conversation with a Samaritan woman, alone, and at the wrong time of day. Disciples are concerned about food, but Jesus tells them the fields are ripe for harvest and doesn't want them to miss what God is about to do, and it's not going to happen where they expect. This woman, one of the gospels' most effective evangelists, with messed up theology, somehow leads a whole village to Christ, not by eloquently expounding on the law and the prophets, but by telling about Jesus and raising the question "Could this be the Christ?" which leads them to seek Jesus out for themselves.

Listen to the message given by Elder David Runge on January 31st, 2010.The Church Beyond the Walls : Encounters with Jesus
Week Two - Jesus Heals a Paralytic
Matthew 9:1-8
Spring / Summer 29AD

Jesus returns to Capernaum, his hometown. He heals a paralytic brought by his friends and demonstrates his authority to forgive sins. Why was this man paralyzed? What does "The Lord's power was present to heal" mean (Luke5:17)? Why were the crowds drawn to Jesus? Why this miracle? Jesus encounters the religious teachers. How might these events relate to the call of Matthew later in this chapter? What prevented Jesus from doing similar miracles in Nazareth (Matt. 13:58).

THE CHURCH BEYOND THE WALLS
Encounters with Jesus

Over the next four weeks, we will be looking at how God's power manifests itself in some unusual places, outside the church walls. We won't be coming up with formulas or a list of principles to apply. God likes to surprise us, and just when you think you have Him figured out, He does something completely new. We'll be exploring Jesus' interactions with some unlikely people and try to get a bigger picture of a Big Picture God. In each of these stories, we will look at what blocks God's power, what releases God's power, what is irrelevant or doesn't matter at all, and perhaps most important, what drew these men and women, many of whom normally wouldn't be participating or welcome in a traditional religious assembly, to Jesus. We will also get a glimpse into the heart of a Pharisee. Join us as we attempt to sharpen our picture of the Creator of the Universe and Lover of our souls.

Each week, we will add new content to the sermon notes while retaining the previous week's information. Check back every week for the updated notes!

Bible Study Method #2: Interpretation - How to Study the Bible

Interpretation Watch the 9th video by Howard Hendricks to learn 5 keys to interpretation.
     1. Content – more time spent in observation means less time in interpretation and more accurate results will be achieved. Look for words, repetition, cause/effect, contrasts, questions & answers. Drench your mind with the passage with continued reading, perceptive meditation. 2. Context – that which goes before, that which goes after. This gives meaning to the passage of interest. Watch the 10th video by Howard Hendricks. 3. Comparison - Requires a complete concordance. The only other key book needed to study the Bible well, besides the Bible. Note that software-based concordances, such as the ones provided below, are more capable than those in print form.

4. Culture - Life does not exist in a vacuum but in a culture. Understanding what people do and why they do it. What does the washing of feet mean? Bible dictionary helps here. 5. Consultation - Look at other sources. Bible Atlas. Bible dictionary. Commentaries. I would add Study Bible which contains bits of each, including an outline of each of the books. Or even elementary language tools. We stand on the shoulders of hundreds of excellent students of the Bible. Be sure to use the correct order: be a master of the Bible text before consulting other sources. Assignment: Study Romans 12:1, 2 by observing, then interpreting, and writing down your findings. Then listen to the 11th video to hear what Howard observed and interpreted from this passage.

Application Watch the 12th video by Howard Hendricks. Most of use are overexposed and underdeveloped in terms of our knowledge of Scripture. Here are four steps to applying Scripture to our lives.
  1. Know – we need an accurate interpretation of the text. 2. Relate – 2 Cor 5:17 – how do I relate this truth to my marriage, family and work. My church and personal life. Before I can help other people apply the Word, I need to do it myself. 3. Meditate – Joshua 1:8, Psalm 119:97. Memorizing Scripture helps you respond at time of need (e.g. temptation) with truth of God. 4. Practice – God will give you opportunities to use the truth of His Word in your life within your society. Watch the 13th video by Howard Hendricks.
Questions to ask in order to apply the Scripture to your life: 1. Is there an example to follow (1 Cor 11:1) 2. Is there a sin to avoid? (Eph 5:25-28) 3. Is there a promise to claim? “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” 4. Is there a prayer to repeat? (e.g. the Lord’s prayer in John 17 and the disciples’ prayer in all the gospels) 5. Is there a command to obey? (Rom 12-16, Gal 5-6; Eph 4-6, Col 3-4) 6. Is there a condition to meet? John 15:7 (what does it mean to abide) 7. Is there a verse or passage to memorize? 8. Is there a challenge to follow? Assignment: Practice the process of application on Ezra 7:10. Then watch the 14th video by Howard Hendricks to learn how he applied this passage.

Practical Steps to Implement Bible Study in Your Life - How to Study the Bible

Watch the 15th video by Howard Hendricks to learn practical steps to implement Bible Study in your life. 1. Make a decision to establish a regular Bible study program. Don’t study for a course but for a lifetime of ministry. You will achieve that to which you aim. Don’t take too big a bite. 2. Come up with a personal plan (how much time per day, and how will I spend it, say 20 min in study and 10 min in prayer). Better to have a smaller plan that you can continue over time. Eventually you will feel more pain not to have it! Salvation does not depend on it but sanctification does. 3. Form a Bible study group of people who have developed similar skills and passion to what you have been doing, to encourage and hold accountable. Offer to meet with someone who is struggling to help them do it. Watch the power of the Word of God transform your life.

Listen to the message delivered on January 10th, 2010.

JOSEPH...THE ULTIMATE BAGGAGE HANDLER
Disposing of the Baggage, Leaving a Legacy
Genesis 50: 1-26

Three legacies Joseph leaves as a model for all of us:

1. Joseph never lost his identity or purpose as a God-follower.

2. Joseph never stopped growing as a forgiver and grace-giver.

3. Joseph died at peace with man and with God.

TAKE AWAY: Life's baggage will either define us by the tyranny of bitterness or as stewards of the contagious charm of grace.

QUESTION FOR REFLECTION AND PRAYER:

What will you do with all the "whys" of this life?

JOSEPH...The Ultimate Baggage Handler: Finishing Well - Joseph Series 2009

Listen to the sermon from January 3rd, 2010. JOSEPH...THE ULTIMATE BAGGAGE HANDLER
Finishing Well
Genesis 47:28-49:33

Three sure ways to finish well:

1. Finish well by blessing the next generation (48:1-49:28).

"By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of Joseph's sons and worshipped as he leaned on the top of his staff."-Hebrews 11:21

God's glory is so all-consuming that it is the very foundation of our blessings or happiness.

2. Finish well by worshipping with genuine joy (47:28-31).

"Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and truth."-John 4:23-24

"Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit."-John 3:6

"If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete."-John 15:10-11

Our happiness in our relationship with the Lord is expressed outwardly through our joy.

3. Finish well by leaving a legacy of faith to follow (48:29-33).

TAKE AWAY: Regardless of our past there always remains the opportunity to make impact by finishing well.

QUESTIONS FOR PRAYER AND REFLECTION:

What impact would you leave with those who know you if you died today? Does it match with the desired impact you wish to leave? If not, what do you need to do today to make a change?

Joseph... The Ultimate Bagger Handler: Wrestling with Prosperity and Poverty - Joseph Series 2009

Listen to this message from Pastor Dan Houze given on Dec. 27th, 2009.JOSEPH...THE ULTIMATE BAGGAGE HANDLER
Wrestling with Prosperity and Poverty
Genesis 47: 13-27Principles of prosperity and poverty:1. Freedom is a privilege, not a right (I Cor. 7:21; I Peter 2:18-25).

2. Prosperity is not a right, but a privilege and responsibility (Deut. 15:4-6; 15:11; Prov. 10:4).

3. In the Bible, poverty is not viewed as an intrinsic evil that must be abolished (Phil. 4:12-13; 2 Cor. 8:9; Luke 6:20-21; John 12:8).

When does wealth become evil?Matt. 6:24-34: has too much of our thought and concern.Luke 16:10-11,14: given too much importance.Luke 3:13-14: when it is wrongfully gained.Matthew 6:19-21; Luke 12:13-21: when it is selfishly stored-up.Luke 15:1ff; James 5:5: When it is sinfully squandered.Matt. 19:16-22; I Tim. 6:17: when we find our security in it.

When is poverty evil?I Tim. 5:9: When there is lack of consideration or responsibility.2 Thess. 3:6-15: When there is a lack of diligence.

The problem of poverty doesn't have a simple solution:Sometimes told to give to those in need (Prov. 22:9; 28:27)Sometimes told to lend to poor without interest (Lev. 25:35-37; Prov. 11:26; 16:26).Paul instructs us to let the lazy person suffer the consequences of their choices (2 Thess. 3:10).

When working with issues of charity to goals should be maintained:We should seek to preserve the dignity of the needy. We should seek to promote the diligence of the needy.

4. The accumulation of wealth is frequently the means for helping the poor (Acts 4:34-35; I Cor. 16:1-2).

5. God's provision for his people does not require times of national economic prosperity.

TAKE AWAY: God's ability to provide for his own does not depend upon the Dow-Jones averages.

QUESTION FOR PRAYER AND CONSIDERATION:
What action or attitude regarding prosperity and poverty do you need to address in your own life?

Listen to the message from December 6, 2009. JOSEPH...THE ULTIMATE BAGGAGE HANDLER
Finding Hope in Repentance
Genesis 44:1-34

"This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem."-Matthew 24:46-47

"Peter replied, ‘Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins'."-Acts 2:38

"In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent."-Acts 17:30

"I have declared to both Jews and Greeks that they must turn to God in repentance and have faith in our Lord Jesus."-Acts 20:21

"I preached that they should repent and turn to God and prove their repentance by their deeds."-Acts 26:20

Three elements of repentance:

1. The Intellectual Element: There is a change of view, a recognition of sin as involving personal guilt, defilement, and helplessness. It is designated in scripture as the "knowledge of sin" (Gen. 44:16; Rom. 3:20).

2. The Emotional Element: There is a change of feeling, manifesting itself in sorrow for sin committed against a holy and just God (Gen. 44:34; Ps. 51:2, 10, 14).

3. The Volitional Element: This is a change of purpose, and inward turning away from sin and a disposition to seek pardon and cleansing (Gen. 44:33; Ps. 51:5, 7, 10; Jeremiah 25:5).

TAKE AWAY: We can enjoy a genuine hope in the reconciling purpose of Jesus' advent when and only when we move in genuine repentance.

QUESTION FOR PRAYER AND CONSIDERATION:

Do you understand what it means to repent with consideration to the intellectual, emotional and volitional elements? Have you then genuinely repented? Prayerfully consider the words of Psalm 51.

Psalm 51

For the director of music. A psalm of David. When the prophet Nathan came to him after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba.

1 Have mercy on me, O God,
       according to your unfailing love;
       according to your great compassion
       blot out my transgressions.

2 Wash away all my iniquity
and cleanse me from my sin.

3 For I know my transgressions,
and my sin is always before me.

4 Against you, you only, have I sinned
and done what is evil in your sight,
so that you are proved right when you speak
       and justified when you judge.

5 Surely I was sinful at birth,
sinful from the time my mother conceived me.

6 Surely you desire truth in the inner parts;
you teach me wisdom in the inmost place.

7 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean;
wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

8 Let me hear joy and gladness;
let the bones you have crushed rejoice.

9 Hide your face from my sins
and blot out all my iniquity.

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

11 Do not cast me from your presence
or take your Holy Spirit from me.

12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation
and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways,
and sinners will turn back to you.

14 Save me from bloodguilt, O God,
       the God who saves me,
and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.

15 O Lord, open my lips,
and my mouth will declare your praise.

16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it;
you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.

17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
       a broken and contrite heart,
O God, you will not despise.

18 In your good pleasure make Zion prosper;
build up the walls of Jerusalem.

19 Then there will be righteous sacrifices,
       whole burnt offerings to delight you;
then bulls will be offered on your altar.

Joseph...The Ultimate Baggage Handler: Facing Our Fears and Tears - Joseph Series 2009

Listen to the message from November 29th, 2009. JOSEPH...THE ULTIMATE BAGGAGE HANDLER
Facing Our Fears and Tears
Genesis 43:1-34

Jacob's 7 Lousy Laws of Leadership

1. Procrastination always solves problems today (v.10).

2. Denying the problem helps your day go smoother (v.2).

3. If you want to win remember, honesty is not always the best policy (v.6).

4. Always look out for number one (v.3).

5. As much as is possible, see to it that others receive the blame for any problems (v.6).

6. Throwing money at a problem always helps (11-12).

7. When all else fails, trust God (v.14).

Two vital principles from Joseph's emotions:

1. Emotions should be real but always yielded to God's purposes.
Ezekiel 24:15-18

2. Real love is always regulated by knowledge and discernment.
Philippians 1:9

TAKE AWAY: Fear distorts reality and makes it impossible for us to make a wise decision, but feelings fully devoted to God produce strength and wisdom.

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION:Call to mind your most recent test. Did you respond with trust or like Jacob?

Are you working for God's approval or resting in the relationship?
