QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION:
Consider you work of ministry over the last 6 months. Now read the following verses: 1 Corinthians 3:12-15 and 2 Corinthians 5:9-10. With your works being tested against your love for Jesus how much of what you have done will survive?
Loving Jesus is a lifestyle which sometimes requires as lifestyle change. Thinking about making life-altering changes can seem overwhelming. So would you be willing to take a smaller bite at a lifestyle change by committing for the duration of this series to the three recommendations under the Redo portion of the sermon?
Jesus' Letter to the Church at Smyrna
Letter to the Suffering Church
Revelation 2:8-11
• 82% of all those killed in the last year for religious beliefs were Christians.
• Of the worlds 2 billion Christians, 200 million in 60 countries live under daily threat of death, imprisonment or torture while another 400 million face discrimination and restrictions for their beliefs.
• Last year 167,000 Christians were beheaded, shot, tortured to death or forcibly starved simply for their belief in Christ.
• The Open Door Ministry’s annual “Hall of Shame” lists Saudi Arabia as the greatest persecutor of Christians.
What does Jesus know about the church at Smyrna?
• He knows their afflictions (physical persecution)
• He knows their poverty (social persecution)
Why are followers of Christ persecuted?
John 15:18-25 gives us three reasons:
1. Because of a different value system: “chosen out of the world” (vv. 18-19)
2. Because of the association with Jesus: “they will treat you this way because of my name…” (v. 21a)
3. Because of ignorance: “They do not know the One who sent me” (v. 21b)
Jesus gives the church two exhortations:
1. “Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer”
2. “Be faithful, even to the point of death…”
Jesus gives the church two promises:
1. They will be rewarded with the “crown of life”
2. They will never face the torment of the “second death”
“Remember your word to your servant, for you have given me hope. My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life.”—Psalm 119:49-50
What do you say to the suffering?
• The Lord knows all about suffering (v.8)
• The Lord knows all about your suffering
• The Lord provides the grace for you to be faithful because he is faithful
• The Lord promises a wonderful future (John 14:1-4)
TAKE AWAY: The present sufferings do not continue forever but the blessings that are ours in Christ go on for eternity.
QUESTION FOR REFLECTION
Would you be spiritually prepared if today you were visited by some form of suffering? Why or why not?
Jesus' Letter to the Church at Pergamum
No audio recording is available of this message (November 23, 2008).
Revelation 2:12-17
Picture of Christ
"Out of his mouth came a sharp double-edged sword."—Revelation 1:16b
"These are the words of him who has the sharp, double-edged sword."—Revelation 2:12
"Out of his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations." Revelation 19:15
Picture of Pergamum (2:13)
• It is heavily influenced by Satan…"where Satan has his throne."
• It is a place of comfort for Satan…"where Satan lives."
Commendation (2:13)
• They really know who Christ is…"Yet you remain true to my name."
• They are courageous in their loyalty to Christ…"You did not renounce your faith in me."
Rebuke and Warning (2:14-16)
• They were overly tolerant of sinful teachings and actions.
o The Doctrine of Balaam…"You have people who hold to the teaching of Balaam."
o The teaching of the Nicolaitans.
• If they didn't repent Jesus would go to war with them…"I will soon come to you and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth."
The Three Cylinders of the World System
1. Lust of the Flesh: Over-indulgence of self
2. Lust of the Eyes: Drive to increase my stuff
3. Pride of Life: Living to impress and be impressed by others
"What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? God will judge those outside. Expel the wicked man from among you."—I Corinthians 5:12-13
Promises to Overcomers (2:17)
• Christ will remain a faithful sustainer…"I will give some of the hidden manna."
• Christ will reward us in accordance with his love…"I will also give him a white stone…"
• Our identity will be based on righteous integrity…"a new name written on it, known only to him who receives it."
TAKE AWAY: The challenge for Christ-followers is to CONNECT with the culture without CONFORMING to the culture.
QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION AND PRAYER
1. Have you erected an idol in your life that has distracted you from real worship? How do you think it has stunted your love toward the Lord?
2. If God were to change your name this morning to best represent your spiritual character what would that name be? What do you desire that name to be?
